Let’s Go RVing! 5 Tips for Surviving an RV Trip with Kids

Go RVing

I have fond memories of my childhood summers. Just about every weekend we would pack up the RV and head up to the mountains with our friends. It was only about a two hour drive, but the long, winding road up the canyon always seemed to take forever. As soon as we would get to our campground, all of us kids would immediately take off and go exploring while our parents set up camp.

We would spend our days fishing, hiking, and wading in the river. At night we would sit around the campfire and tell stories while roasting marshmallows. I was always sad when we had to pack up the RV and head home, but I knew we would be back.

I’ll never forget the trip we took to Mount Rushmore after the summer of 8th grade. It rained the entire time we were there, so we ended up entertaining ourselves in the RV. We played endless amounts of card games and ate way too much junk food. I remember being thankful that weren’t camping in tents and had our RV to keep us dry and warm!

Our days of RVing stopped once I was in high school. Life got busy and my dad sold our RV. At the time, it seemed like the best choice but looking back I wish we would have made time for it.

Now that I am a parent, I want my kids to experience the same excitement I did with RVing. My husband and I have decided that we are going to rent an RV and take a road trip with the kids. We haven’t decided where we will go yet, but we are thinking about going to Mount Rushmore or the Grand Canyon. Although my husband would disagree, I think it would also be fun to go “glamping” (glamorous camping). I think it would be amazing to take a road trip all the way to CA and go to Disneyland!

Thinking about going RVing? Here are some reasons you should:

5 Tips for Surviving an RV Trip with Kids

Pack Items for Kids to Do on the Road: Games, DVDs, puzzles and books are great ways to keep the kids entertained on the long drive.

Play Road Games: I-Spy, Punch Bug and License Plate Poker are just three competitive activities that potentially involve everyone on the RV and keep kids occupied.

Plan Your Stops: Even if you pack food, it’s always a good idea to stop frequently to allow everyone to take bathroom breaks and get some fresh air.

Plan at Least One Activity a Day: Research easy-to-reach places of interest along your route, and plan at least one activity stop per day.

Pick a Kid-Friendly Campground: Examine the amenities of the campgrounds you might stop at during the journey, and pick one that has a swimming pool, game room, or some other activity for your kids to do while you are there.
