With a family of five, I often get frustrated at how much it costs for us to do anything fun. If we take a trip to the movies, it costs us at least $30 for a matinee. Any type of local attractions, like the zoo, put us back at least $40. An outing as a family can become very expensive very quickly. In order to save our family money, we only go to the movies and other attractions on special occasions. We have learned how to have fun doing other things that are free or cost very little money.
Here are some fun activities you can do as a family that won’t break the bank:
1. Head to your local library. Most libraries offer story time at least once a week and it’s free to attend. Libraries also have designated kid areas that are full of books, toys, games, puzzles, etc. that will keep the kids entertained for a long time.
2. Have a picnic at the park. You could bring a packed lunch from home, or you could stop and grab a couple of foot longs to split. It makes for a cheap outing and the kids always have fun.
3. If you like eating out as a family, check to see what restaurants offer a kids eat free day. We do this at least 2-3 times a month and it saves us a ton of money!
4. Have a family game night. Get out all of your favorite board games, pop some popcorn, and enjoy the time together.
5. Instead of taking the whole family to the movies, rent a movie from Redbox for only $1. It’s way cheaper and you can enjoy the movie from the comfort of your own home.
The key to saving your family money on entertainment expenses is to be disciplined about how the money will be spent. If you can only afford to spend $50 a month on activities, then pick 1-2 things a month that you really want to do and then the rest of the month get creative! You’ll quickly find that there are many things that you can do for free!
What are your favorite things to do as a family that are free (or almost free)?

Such great suggestions... especially the library. For the life of me, I don't know why I never think of that one.

these are good ideas. my grandsons are always wanting to 'go do stuff' but dont seem to realize that 'doing stuff' costs money. we do do the library thing and they really seem to enjoy that.

Most museums and aquariums have local appreciation days that include free admission. My family looks forward to these days each year.

I agree that being creative is the key. And kids are really good at helping come up with things to do. This is a nice go-to list
