DIY Spice Sented Ornaments

The holiday season is such a fun time of the year to be in the kitchen. There are so many yummy treats, savory dishes and crafts that you can make.

Over Christmas Break, I plan on keeping my kids busy with some fun recipes and crafts.

We will be making a variety of holiday cookies, as well as Spice Scented Ornaments.

Spice Scented Ornaments

These Spice Scented Ornaments are simple to make and the best part is they smell amazing!

The secret is to add essential oils such as peppermint, cinnamon, nutmeg or clove to your dough — this makes them smell so yummy and festive.

If you have kids, this is a great project to do with them. They will love rolling out the dough and using cookie cutters to make the holiday shapes.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup flour
1 cup salt
1/2 cup warm water
star anise pods
1 tbsp nutmeg
1 tbsp white sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
20 whole cloves

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

butter knife and/or cookie cutters
rolling pin
parchment paper
cookie sheet
essential oils such as peppermint, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
  2. Combine flour, salt and warm water in a large bowl and mix until a soft dough is formed. If you want to add essential oil(s) for an additional scent, do that now. A few drops is plenty.
  3. Turn the dough on a lightly floured surface. Then roll the dough out onto parchment paper to about ¼ – ½ inch thick. (It is easier to roll out on the paper than to try to move the cut outs to the cookie sheet after)
  4. Use a butter knife or cookie cutters to cut out various shapes.
  5. Break the cinnamon sticks into pieces. Gently push the star anise, cinnamon sticks and cloves into the dough cut outs.
  6. Sprinkle with nutmeg and sugar mixture (the sugar will give a little shimmer!).
  7. Use a skewer or pencil to create a hole at the top of the ornament so you can thread string to hang later.
  8. Bake for at least an hour or until the dough appears dry and has hardened. Remove from oven and let cool.
  9. Once cooled, thread a piece of yarn, string or fabric through the hole and tie a knot at the end. Hang on your tree or wrap it up and give it as a gift!
