Prepare for the Unexpected with Aflac’s Real Cost Calculator

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Aflac. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

My family is blessed to have great medical insurance through my husband’s employer. Our monthly premium is very affordable and we have a low deductible for our family of five. Should we have a medical emergency, our insurance will cover a large portion of the bill. With that said, I don’t think my family is prepared to cover the additional expenses that would come with an unexpected illness or injury.

My husband is the main provider for our family. If he was unable to work due to an illness or injury, we could only survive so long on our savings. Eventually, we would run out of money to pay for everyday expenses such as our mortgage, utilities and car payment. It’s so easy to overlook the real cost of health care and forget about all of the day-to-day expenses that would start to pile up.

The reality is not many Americans are prepared for an unexpected medical emergency. When the average hospital visit costs almost $10,000, it’s not surprising that medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy.

With medical costs on the rise, what can you do to prepare yourself?

Aflac Real Cost Calculator

Aflac Real Cost Calculator

The Aflac Real Cost Calculator (RCC) is an illustrative, interactive tool that shows the average out-of-pocket expenses associated with a number of injuries and illnesses. It was developed to show the health care costs that major medical insurance doesn’t cover.

The calculator specifically includes the medical costs and living expenses not covered by major medical insurance for several types of cancer, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, broken leg, as well as common childhood ailments, pneumonia and asthma.

I played around with the Aflac RCC a little bit and was shocked to see that a broken leg would cost me almost $12,000! I would spend about $8,000 in medical costs and close to $1,500 in out-of-pocket expenses like child care and transportation. On top of that, I could expect around $2,300 in household expenses. As scary as it sounds, my family could go from being financially stable to being financially unstable in a matter of days.

I would encourage you to check out the Aflac Real Cost Calculator for yourself. Does cancer or diabetes run in your family? Look and see how much it would cost you if you came down with an unexpected injury or illness. You may be surprised!

  • Benefits are paid directly to the policy holder — not the hospital or doctor — to help with all costs and expenses, from rent and gas to childcare and groceries.

My Experience with Aflac

From my own experience, I can tell you that Aflac is awesome! When I was pregnant with my twin girls, we racked up a ton of medical bills. Between my prenatal care, delivery, and minor surgery I had to have a month after the girls were born, we hardly paid anything out of pocket. We of course had to pay our health insurance deductible, but that was it! I was covered by an Aflac hospital policy that paid us cash each time I went to the hospital. This extra cash was such a blessing and really helped offset our expenses.

Regardless of whether or not you choose Aflac, I encourage you to take a hard look at how you will cover the costs that major medical insurance doesn’t, and establish a long-term plan for financial protection against unexpected health care costs.
