These homemade colored sugar cubes make a sweet little treat for Valentine’s Day or anytime you want add detail to a party or get together. Quick to prepare and inexpensive, they also make a nice gift for a coffee lover inside a pretty glass jar.
The great thing about these homemade sugar cubes is they can easily be made into a wide variety of fun shapes and designs to fit any occasion. All you need are small square silicone molds that can be found at just about any big box or craft store. I recommend this one from Amazon.
Or you could also make simple cubes like I did for a Valentine’s Day party we have coming up. For that you only need a small pan and tinfoil and then you simply mold the sugar mixture into the pan and cut into small squares with a knife (see detailed instructions below).
The other great thing about these homemade sugar cubes is you can easily change up the colors to match any party or holiday. How fun would it be to make green for St. Patty’s Day or a combination of red, white, and blue for the 4th of July?

- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp. water

Instructions
- In a medium bowl, stir sugar and water until well combined. Be sure not to add too much water or it will just dissolve the sugar. It should be slightly damp like wet sand.
- Add 2-3 drops of food coloring and stir. Continue to add food coloring and stir until desired color is reached.
- Scoop the colored sugar into small square silicone molds or press firmly into a small pan, smoothing evenly with a rubber spatula.
- Let cubes dry out for ½ an hour, then remove from mold gently, or slice with a knife horizontally and vertically to make cubes about ½ “ x ½ “.
- Allow cubes to finish drying completely, overnight is best. To speed up the process, place trays in freezer until solid.
- Once cubes are hardened and set well, remove and smooth rough edges gently.
- Store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
