We have this ritual when a new baby comes into our family that the youngest gets a little stuffed animal that is only theirs. It started when my two year old was born. My then three year old, Afton, was certain that she was going to be replaced by this new baby and that we were going to give all of her things to her sister. In reality there were some things that were passed down like the crib and baby clothes, for example. This struggle was so fierce for her that she started rejecting all of her things because she feared that we were going to give them to the baby eventually anyway. Enter Walter.
Walter is a crocheted bear that I purchased for Afton when she was born and I just love him because he so sweet and simple. At this moment, when she was so afraid we’d forgotten her, we pulled out Walter and explained that he was only hers and that nobody could take him. Likewise, when my youngest was born, we purchased our then two year old, Charlie, a bear of her own named Walternate (any Fringe fans out there?). Now that we are on our third and likely last child, we won’t have the same need of a lovey that the others did, but I still feel it is appropriate to give her a special critter from my husband and I. That’s where Bommerscheim Buddies comes in to play.
So what, exactly is a Bommerschiem Buddie? Well these little guys are sweet stuffed animals with washable covers, made by a company that is truly remarkable in their foresight and ingenuity. Not only are their animals washable, but they have created a variety of covers for their buddies, Ittie Bittie Buddies, matching blankets, and more. They have also looked at the science between a child’s’ bond with their stuffed animals and incorporated those ideas into their creations. Additionally, they have added fun features to their website like coloring pages featuring the dear buddies and the ability to personalize your buddie with your child’s name.
Both of my older girls’ loveys are simple and look like the kind of toys enjoyed by the kids of generations long ago, and the Bommerscheim Buddies will fit in perfectly with my love of vintage toys. My initial thought when I saw these little guys was that they looked just like something my grandmother would make! Upon digging through their website a little more, they are in fact, the designs of the owner’s aunt Joan.
Not only are these the cutest toys that I have seen in long time, they are also ingenious by design. You see, the Bommerschiem Buddies have covers that are washable so you can wash your kiddos favorite buddy without the trauma of removing their friend from their presence. Those little bunny toes you can see poking out through the bottom of the box are actually velcro tabs that allow you to quickly remove a soiled cover and replace it with a clean or different one.
And, unlike some of the homemade toys we have acquired over the years, these guys are tough! They are extremely well made (in the USA) and look like they will endure years of love with aplomb! I cannot say enough about this family run company and their insight into the mind of children. We haven’t come up with a name for this little bunny yet, but I’m thinking Olivia or Astrid (back to my love of the show Fringe).
