If you’re like most busy moms, your daily task list may be seemingly never-ending. And while filing taxes every year is an important occasion, it can often get pushed to the side by other demanding items that need your attention until the looming tax deadline reminds you it’s about high time to file. With this year’s deadline pushed back to April 18, there are still some easy and quick ways for you to file your federal and state refunds without needing an extension.
For years I have used TaxAct to file my taxes. The digital and download tax filing brand has easy-to-use products that come at incredibly affordable prices. Compared to other software products such as TurboTax and H&R Block, TaxAct still offers a free federal and state version of its Online Free Edition until this Monday, April 18, which is great for simple tax situations.
If you’re like me and have a more complex situation, however, TaxAct has three other packages to choose from to suit any filer’s needs. These are the Basic ($14.99), Plus ($24.99) and Premium ($34.99) products. The packages offer a step-by-step question and answer process as well as access to its support center where you can run questions by tax professionals via phone or email. I was able to compare prices to similar tax software and TaxAct is still the best price for filing taxes online.
The biggest benefit to using online or download software like TaxAct this late in the game is that it allows you to get your taxes done quickly and is especially helpful if you typically don’t prepare taxes yourself. TaxAct is fairly detailed in each step, asking you to import last year’s tax information if you have older taxes in PDF form, making things a little easier. From there, you’re able to walk through the software and it does a good job of asking you basic questions to make sure you won’t miss any deductions or credits. It even has a “life events” menu to choose from different life events to work for your unique tax situation—this includes events like raising a child, owning a home or moving.
While there are quite a few sections to walk through depending on your tax situation, the thing that I like the most is that it can still be done quickly and the online version has a nice interface. Once you’ve completed filing, it checks once more for accuracy and you can automatically track the status of your refund.
