Bathroom Etiquette 101: How Do You Deal with the Smell?

Bathroom etiquette — an embarrassing subject that is often considered too taboo to discuss. I mean, who really wants to talk about what they do in the bathroom? Most people keep that topic of conversation to themselves. Today, however, we are going to step out of our comfort zones to talk about what goes on behind the bathroom door.

Over the last few months, Charmin has been asking real people all the questions you want to know about going to the bathroom. The toilet paper company has been sharing the answers through a series of “Charmin Asks” videos. They are asking questions like, “Over or under?” “Matches, air freshener, or “deal with it”? “How long do you need to be dating someone before you go #2 at his/her house?” “Are Skid Marks a Deal Breaker?” and “What’s the craziest thing you’ve done after running out of toilet paper?”

The videos are totally raw and hilarious! One that really drew my attention is titled, “How Do You Deal With the Smell?” This video is especially funny to me because I am the type of person to say, “just deal with it” and my husband will do whatever he can to “cover” it up. Fan, candles, air freshener, matches — I’ve seen it all! In my opinion, all these things just make the smell worse.

I always find it amusing when I am at party or get-together at someone’s house and someone goes above and beyond to try and hide that they went #2. Sorry, but excessively spraying a bottle of air freshener only masks the smell and makes it totally obvious that you went. If you’re trying to hide it, don’t go out of your way to cover it up. It’s also funny when you go into a public restroom and someone has clearly stunk the place up and is too afraid to come out of their stall. Hey, it happens. We all have times when we have to go in public places, but the least you can do is offer a courtesy flush!

I know it’s not always easy to discuss what goes on behind the bathroom door, but hopefully this gave you a little laugh and helped you realize that talking about it can be fun and lighthearted.

So tell me — How Do You Deal with the Smell? Are you one to use candles, air freshener or matches? Or do you say, “deal with it?”
